E-WASTE

E-waste prohibited from Hanover-Walkerton Landfill Site effective September 1st, 2007!

It is estimated that approximately 50,000 pounds of E-Waste is disposed of annually in the joint Hanover-Walkerton Landfill Site.  E-Waste contains a variety of toxic substances including lead, mercury, and cadmium which if allowed to enter the environment may result in devastating effects on human health and eco systems.  It is incumbent upon all sectors of society to ensure that E-Waste items are diverted from communal landfill sites so that they may be reused where possible and ultimately appropriately recycled.

Electronic waste will be accepted for recycling for a nominal fee at the following locations:

Electronics Central in Hanover and The Source by Circuit City in Walkerton have a battery, ink cartridge (popular ones are Lexmark, Hp, Canon, Brother, and Epson) and cell phone (analog or digital, with or without battery) recycling program.

If you have a unique battery that is no longer working we also have a battery rebuild program.  A Battery rebuild is the process of taking a weak or expired battery pack, removing all the cells (not withstanding their condition) and replacing them with new superior cells.  The superior cells are a higher capacity (10% to 80% increase which means longer run times), better chemistry (less toxic chemicals, therefore better for the environment) and lower internal resistance (efficiency of the cell is improved under high drain conditions, e.g. drills).  There is a fee for this service.

There is no charge for recycling of rechargeable batteries, cartridges and cell phone and it’s very easy.  Drop off these items to one of the following locations.  Open seven days a week.
