The Town of Hanover officially marked the beginning of construction on its new police station with a launch ceremony held Monday evening at the future site of the facility on 10th Avenue.

Mayor Sue Paterson and members of Council were joined by the New Police Station Project Committee, Hanover Police Service Board Chair Selwyn Hicks, Hanover Police Chief Chris Knoll, Deputy Chief George Hebblethwaite, project consultants and community members to celebrate the start of construction on an important investment in community safety and municipal infrastructure.

The new police station will be constructed adjacent to the Civic Theatre at the former fire hall property located at 443 10th Avenue, replacing the current police facility that has served the community since 1979.

Recently, the construction contract was awarded to Domm Construction Ltd. following a competitive tender process. Domm Construction submitted the successful bid of $10.18 million, which was the lowest bid received and within the approved construction budget.

Council previously approved a revised project budget of $11.3 million plus HST to support the construction of the new facility and associated project costs.

The approximately 15,500-square-foot, two-storey facility has been designed to meet the operational needs of Hanover Police Service today while providing flexibility for future growth. Additionally, the project includes a secure outdoor storage facility and an accessible public washroom that will serve residents and visitors in downtown Hanover.

Construction of the new facility is expected to continue through 2027, with the building designed to support modern policing operations, improved functionality, accessibility and long-term service delivery for the Hanover community.

Mayor Sue Paterson noted that the new facility represents a significant investment in the future of Hanover and a commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and responsive policing services for years to come.

"Today marks an important milestone for Hanover. Our new police station is an investment in community safety, responsible planning and the future growth of our municipality. The facility has been thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of our police service while creating a lasting asset for residents for decades to come."

Chief Chris Knoll said the new police station will support the evolving needs of both members and the community they serve.

"The new station will provide our members with a modern, functional and efficient facility that supports current policing needs while allowing for future growth. We appreciate the support of Council, the Police Service Board and our community as we move forward with this exciting project."

Hanover Police Service Board Chair Selwyn Hicks highlighted the collaborative effort that has brought the project to this milestone.

"Reaching this construction milestone is the result of considerable planning, collaboration and dedication from many individuals. The Hanover Police Service Board is proud to support a project that strengthens public safety and positions the service for the future."

The project has been guided by the New Police Station Project Team since Council approved the project charter in November 2024. Throughout the design process, staff, consultants and Hanover Police Service representatives worked to ensure the facility is operationally effective, energy efficient and adaptable to future needs.

Construction mobilization is expected to begin immediately, with site activity increasing throughout the coming weeks.
