Hanover Welcomes the World: Newcomer Resource Centre Opens at Hanover Public Library

In a heartwarming celebration of unity and inclusion, the Town of Hanover and the Hanover Public Library officially launched the Newcomer Resource Centre on September 20th, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the town’s commitment to welcoming new Canadians and residents.

The dedication event was part of Welcoming Week and Culture Days, and brought together community members in a joyful celebration of diversity, connection, and belonging.

The Newcomer Resource Centre is a cornerstone initiative under Hanover’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027, designed to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment. Located inside the Hanover Public Library, the centre offers welcome packages, settlement resources, and a space for newcomers to build meaningful relationships and access vital information.

“The Newcomer Resource Centre is a reflection of Hanover’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community,” said April Marshall, Economic Development Manager for the Town of Hanover. “We’re proud to offer a space where new residents can find the support and resources they need to thrive.”

The event began with a ceremonial opening cry by Town Crier Jennifer Olivero, setting a tone of unity and pride. Guests were treated to authentic Mexican cuisine from Turquesa Mexican Food, and the highlight of the day was a social dance performance by the Hanover’s Women Collective, which brought neighbours together in a vibrant display of cultural expression.

“Hanover is a community that values diversity and connection,” said Mayor Sue Paterson. “This initiative is a meaningful step toward ensuring every newcomer feels seen, supported, and celebrated.”

Attendees were invited to join the dance or cheer from the sidelines, reinforcing the message that everyone belongs.

The Hanover Public Library played a key role in bringing this initiative to life. Special thanks were extended to the library board and staff for their collaboration and dedication to creating a space that reflects Hanover’s values of heritage, innovation, people, and place.

“Libraries are gateways to community and knowledge,” said Carolyn Caskanette, CEO/Chief Librarian of the Hanover Public Library. “We’re excited to be part of this initiative, helping newcomers access resources and build connections in Hanover.”

The Newcomer Resource Centre also supports Hanover’s economic development goals, aligning with the town’s HIPP Culture values. By welcoming newcomers and celebrating cultural diversity, Hanover strengthens its ability to attract and retain talent, support local businesses, and build a resilient, future-ready community.

As the town continues to grow, this initiative reaffirms Hanover’s identity as a place where everyone feels seen, supported, and celebrated.
