Town of Hanover Announces Exciting Lineup of Events for Earth Day 2024

HANOVER, ON – The Town of Hanover is pleased to announce a series of events and activities to celebrate Earth Day 2024. The events aim to raise awareness and promote environmental sustainability within our community.

From April 8 to April 22, Mayor Paterson invites individuals, groups, and businesses to team up for the Mayor’s Tidy Town Challenge. Groups are encouraged to come together to pick up litter along sidewalks, in our parks and green spaces. Teams can register at www.hanover.ca/events/earth-day-2024 or by phone at 519.364.2310 x 2121. Registered teams will receive a complementary clean-up kit.

On Saturday, April 20, residents are invited to participate in the Community Wide Garage Sale. This event provides an opportunity for individuals to give their household goods a second life while reducing waste. Residents can register to participate by completing the Town of Hanover Yard Sale application form before 9 am on Thursday, April 18. A map of the participating locations will be made available for download at www.hanover.ca/events/earth-day-2024

Discover your green thumb at the Hanover Public Library by selecting from a variety of seeds and take home up to 5 seed types to plant in your own garden. In support of Earth Day, participants who collect their seeds on April 20 and April 22 will receive starter pots, and soil to help kickstart their planting journey.

Additionally, on April 21, a Community Clean-Up will be organized to target litter in various locations within the community and green spaces. Volunteers are requested to meet at the P&H Centre at 1 pm for instructions, supplies, and location assignments. Volunteers can expect to spend 1 to 1.5 hours of volunteer time.

On Monday, April 22, Earth Day itself, Hanover invites residents to participate in the Zero Waste Challenge. This initiative encourages individuals to reduce their waste footprint by embracing the principles of "reduce, reuse, and recycle." By making small yet impactful changes in everyday habits, such as turning off the water while brushing teeth and opting for reusable water bottles, residents can make a positive difference in the environment.

To engage the younger generation, a Student Recycled Art Contest is being offered. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity by creating an art piece using only recycled items. This online contest will feature prizes donated by our sponsor, Hallman Motors. Winners will be announced on the Town's social media platforms. The submission deadline for the contest is April 22.

Lastly, in collaboration with the Library, a Clean and Green Foraging for Beginners Workshop is taking place on Monday, April 22, at 6:30 pm in the Saugeen Room at the Hanover Civic Centre. Led by Jess Marin from the Bohemian Farm, this workshop will provide valuable insights on foraging, as well as guidance on identifying basic plants and embarking on a foraging journey safely. Due to limited space, interested individuals are encouraged to pre-register at the Library. The workshop admission fee is $2 per person.

Hanover is proud to celebrate Earth Day 2024 and encourages residents and businesses to actively participate in these exciting events and activities. Let us come together to preserve and enhance our natural surroundings, making a lasting impact on our environment.

A special thank you to Hanover’s Hallman Motors for their generous sponsorship in support of our 2024 Earth Day events. For more information and event updates, please visit www.hanover.ca/events/earth-day-2024
